In a Word: Bumptious

Bumptious is an adjective meaning “proud or confident in a loud and rude way that annoys other people.”

Why do I like this word? It’s fun to say, although I do have use for it now and then: Writers and academics can be a bumptious bunch.

If you’ve ever seen Godard’s French New Wave film Breathless, you know this guy epitomizes bumptiousness:
